Nannie (or Nancy) Wilson Byrd, born near Wheelock Mission, was my grandfather's sister, and the first child for John and Jane (James) Wilson, of the Fort Towson District in the Choctaw Nation. John Wilson operated a mill and store at the most important news and trading center, between Fort Towson and Wheelock, called "Clear Creek." Clear Creek is a rustling, sparkling little stream of clear water that flows southward in a section of the country where most of the streams are sluggish and of a reddish hue.
In 1871 at age 19 Nannie married Benjamin Franklin Byrd, brother to William Leander Byrd, chief of the Chickasaw Nation. Nannie and "Frank" Byrd settled in Stonewall. It was at least ten years after the Civil War before conditions in the Chickasaw Nation returned to anything like the people had known before the war. It was during that period that Stonewall came into existence.
In 1868 the first Stonewall store was opened. B.F. BYRD and J.M. PERRY purchased the old store around 1882 and operated it for four or five years before selling out. Tragically, Nannie passed away in 1872 shortly after giving birth to her only child, a daughter, Nannie Byrd, who would grow up to marry Clark Wasson, a successful polititian and member of the Oklahoma legislature. They settled in Antlers and raised seven children.
