Sam's first wife was Nancy E. Leeper. They married 7 Feb 1877 in Montague Co., TX. They had the following children: Nettie I.(McGuire), Martha L., Tennie Nevada (Cockrell), and Mary Elizabeth(Owen).

OBIT (found on World Connect)it appeared in the Hillsboro Mirror on November 22, 1922: DOUBLE FUNERAL AT AQUILLA- S.D. Tyra dropped dead shortly after noon. He seemed to be in best of health and had attended to his regular work; ate a hearty dinner and was sitting in his chair and fell dead. Mr. Tyra was a well to do farmer, living about 6 miles south of Aquilla. He is survived by a wife and eleven children.
Mr. John Galyen who lived a short distance from Mr. Tyra was kicked by a mule last Monday afternoon and was rushed to Waco to a hospital, but died about midnight. He was survived by a wife and eight children.
Both were good citizens and will be missed in our community. Funeral services were held for both at Lebanon Cemetery conducted by Rev. J.T. Sanders. This entire community extends its tenderest sympathy. (contributed by Yvone Akin).

Samuel is the son of Joseph S. Tyra and Isabella Ashley.
