Moses Whiteaker was born in 1791 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, the son of Richard Whiteaker and Rachel Bentley. He moved with his family to Washington County, Virginia in 1796.
Moses married Mary "Polly" Bowman in 1815. Mary was born in Tennessee in 1799, the daughter of Esaias and Ann Bowman. The children of Moses and Polly were: Mary Ann, William Silvester, Calvin, Lydia E., Moses, Jr., Absalom Rufus, Julina O., and Eliza Adaline.
Moses purchased land with his father in 1814 in Washington County on both sides of the North Fork of the Holston River at the mouth of Tumbling Creek. Moses purchased 200 acres of land in Poor Valley, on the south side of Clinch Mountain to the top of Piney (now Little) Mountain from Andrew J. Hayter in 1855. This land was willed to his daughter, Lydia, wife of John Litton. It is said that John Litton disappeared somewhere in the West and Moses' will states that his devises to Lydia were not to be under the control of her husband if he is now alive.
Moses died on September 14, 1875 in Washington County. He is buried along with his daughter Lydia E. Litton in the Hayter-Litton Cemetery. His stone is marked Moses Whiteaker "Father", Lydia's stone is marked Lydia E. Litton, "daughter". Moses' stone also says he was "about 84 y". Polly Whiteaker died February 10, 1870 and is buried on her father's farm (Esasias Bowman).
