His plane departed Stornara Field, Italy flying to the northeast to target a Shell Refinery near Budapest; the plane was lost over the target which was 50 km west of Budapest. Eight of the 10 crew were reported as missing; two were captured and held as POWs in Germany. Russell served as the bombardier on a B-24J Liberator.
