Samuel C. Beam (1824-1880) was born in New Jersey, and moved to
Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, in 1845. Beam built the largest residence in Logan
County, Illinois. He was the Supervisor of the Road District, a miller, and a grain dealer. He also worked for the Railroad and during the process of laying train track across Illinois the farmers hired Abe Lincoln to defend their property and try to force Beam from cutting into their land to lay tracks. Lincoln lost. By the way The Turley family and the Lincoln family were personal friends.
This lawsuit with the railroad is in college text books for
legal studies with Beam and Lincoln.
