Mildred Winn Smith, of Islandton, entered into her state of eternal rest on the afternoon of January 3, 2010, in Charleston following an extended illness.
Mrs. Smith was born August 28, 1939, in Colleton County and was a daughter of the late Miles Walter Winn and the late Rosella Martin Winn.
She was a graduate of Bells High School - Class of 1956 and then obtained her formal education in Business Management from Palmer Business School where she graduated with the Class of 1958.
Mrs. Smith worked and retired after many years as a legal secretary with the Law Office of Senator James P. "Preacher" Harrelson and T. K. Alexander, Esquire in Walterboro.
She was a longtime member of Peniel Baptist Church in Islandton where she was very active in many aspects of the church's work. Demonstrating her love for her Lord and her church, she was currently serving as the Church Treasurer - a position she had held for eight years, as well as was a member of the Social Committee and Cemetery Committee. At her church, she was formerly a Children's Sunday School Class Teacher and when the church functioned from the old sanctuary she served as an assistant pianist on many occasions. She was a member of the Community Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Islandton.
Mildred had a true love for people and her heart was with everyone she knew. She loved gardening, reading, and will be fondly remembered as a good Southern cook.
Surviving are: her husband of forty-six years, Roy Lee "Smitty" Smith; a son, Walter Gregory Smith and wife Susan D. of Islandton; a daughter, Rhonda Smith Mellon and husband Benjamin Lee of Columbia; a sister, Sara Winn Strickland and husband David of Walterboro; one grandchild, Cole Gregory Smith; two nieces, Sherri Strickland Crosby and husband Herman and Terri Strickland Johns and husband Marcus both of Walterboro; and a nephew, David Strickland and wife Sherry of Summerville; as well as several other nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, by whom she was always affectionately known as Aunt Mimie that also survive.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Rose Winn.
Interment was in Peniel Baptist Church, Islandton.
