David was a son of John Philip and Susannah (Crabill) Pitman (aka Bittmann) who settled in the Shenandoah Valley in the 1760's. The location of his parents' graves is not clear, but has been described by Daniel Bly as the "old Baker homestead along North Mountain about 2 miles north west of Strasburg, VA." In March 2011, apparent grave markers were identified for both Philip and Susannah at Samuel Hockman Cemetery, located NW of Strasburg.

David was first cousin to John Pittman and Catherine (Pittman) Snider, whose families lived in the old Scott Twp near today's O'Bannon State Park.

See John Philip & Susannah's family history for more details on David & Mary Ann's family.

David & Mary Ann's daughter, Lydia, married Samuel Senseney who is buried in Pitman Cemetery, but Lydia's whereabouts is not known.

David & Mary Ann's daughter, Susan, married Philip Rosenbarger.
