Professional Boxer. He was a 19th Century bare knuckle heavyweight prize fighter, dubbed “The Tipton Slasher” for the namesake of his home town in England. One of his most noted fights was a 74 round bout with American heavyweight boxer Charles Freeman in 1842. He was the heavyweight pugilist Champion of England, (1850-56). He was finally defeated by Tom Sayers in 1857. After losing his Champion of England title, he became the landlord of the Bricklayer's Arms. He died at age 61 in Bilston, England. In May 1993, a bronze statue was erected in his honor at Coronation Gardens, Tipton, England and remains were removed from St John's Churchyard and re-interred at the foot of the statue.
