Forrest City Arkansas Daily Times-Herald-Obituary:1944 July 31-The War Dept. today notified Mrs. Velmagene Thomas Buchanan that her husband, Pfc. Leo Burgess Buchanan, 29 years old, with the infantry in France, was killed in action on July 6th, 1944. Pfc. Buchanan had been in the Army ten months. He received his training at Camp Fannin, Texas and Ft. George E. Meade, Maryland, prior to going overseas in April and was stationed in England before being sent to France. His last letter home was written on July 1, and he was in France at that time. Pfc. Buchanan was born in Ecru, Miss., and spent his childhood in Earle, later moving to Forrest City. He graduated from FCHS and attended Monticello A.& M. College. On July 5th, 1936, he was married to Miss Velmagene Thomas and they have made their home in Forrest City where he was employed with the Standard Oil Company until he was inducted into the service. He was a member of the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Velmagene Buchanan, a 16 month old son, Thomas Mills, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. P. Buchanan, formerly of this city, now of Pontotoc, Miss.
