Catherine was the wife of Charles McKernin. They were married on April 30, 1872 at L'Immaculate Conception Church in St. Jean, New Brunswick. This family can be found on the 1880 census for Spencer, MA. and on the 1900 census for Monson, MA, as well as the 1910 census for Norwich CT. According to family stories, they also lived in Vermont, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick during the early years of their marriage.

Her obituary read: Mrs. Catherine (McDonald) McKernin, widow of Charles McKernin, died after a ten day illness of pneumonia. She was born in New Brunswick, Canada, August 9, 1850. For more than 15 years, she had been a resident of Woonsocket, making her home with her son, Frank E. McKernin of Bernice Avenue. For the past year and a half she had made her home with another son in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had only recently returned to Woonsocket. Her husband died 15 years ago (in 1909).

She is survived by two sons, Frank E. McKernin of Harrisville and Dr. Edward J McKernin of Brooklyn, a daughter, Mrs. Julia Reuter of Worcester, Mass; a sister Julia Peagrean; 7 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Another son named William died before Catherine.

She was a member of the Congregational Church of Monson, Mass. Funeral services were held at the house of her granddaughter, Mrs. Hebert L Smith of 170 Bernice Avenue on Sunday afternoon with Rev. Edward Hilton Post, D.D. pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church officiated.
Catherine's grave is next to her son Frank's grave in North Smithfield, RI.
