George Mears (45985045)
Suggested edit: Indianapolis People, Indianapolis, IN, Saturday, May 24, 1879: The venerable and esteemed Dr. George W. Mears died at his home – the home of the past thirty years – corner of Vermont and Meridian streets, on last Tuesday afternoon. He was, at the time of his death, president of the medical department of Butler University and a professor in the Medical College of Indiana. For many years Dr. Mears has been at the head of the profession in this city, and one of its most estimable citizens. He was one of the founders of Christ Church, and a most exemplary member. Few pass away from life with so unblotted a public and private record as Dr. Mears. His family, consisting of his wife, formerly Miss Ewing, of Washington; his daughter, Mrs. Reginald Hall, of this city; Dr. Ewing Mears, of Philadelphia, and H. B Mears, of New York, were all assembled by his bedside, with many other friends, anxious to pay the last tribute of respect to an old and valued friend. A committee of resolutions was reported at the meeting of the Medical Society, on Thursday. The funeral of Dr. took place from Christ Church, yesterday.
Medical Libraries, C D Spivak, MD, Editor & Publisher, Denver, CO, 1901: …through the generosity of Dr. J. Ewing, Mears, of Philadelphia. He has given to the Marion County Medical society property in Indianapolis valued at $25,000 on which to erect a memorial to his father, who was a pioneer physician in that city. Dr. Mears has also donated to the memorial library in his home, several thousand volumes of medical works. The home and library is to be known as the George W. Mears Memorial library.
