Durrett Brothers Rites Thursday
MEMPHIS, Aug. 10 - Joint funeral services for Robert Barton Durrett and Freebourne E. Durrett, World War II casualties, sons of Mrs. and Mrs. B.E. Durrett of Lakeview, will be held at 3:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Lakeview Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. O.C. Evans, Rev. J.T. Hoggatt, minister of the Nazarene Church, and Rev. L.M. Clemanas, minister of the Baptist Church, all of Lakeview.
Joint military services will be conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts of Lakeview and Memphis. The Memphis VFW post is named in honor of Freebourne Durrett, one of the first Hall County boys killed in action in World War II. He was reported missing June 6, 1942, when his plane was shot down 300 miles northwest of Midway.
The body of Robert will arrive in Memphis Wednesday morning. He was killed during an enemy infiltration attack early on the morning of April 21, 1945, in the vicinity of Imugan, along the Villaverde Trail on Luzon, Philippine Islands.
Freebourne was born Sept. 9, 1907, in Jones County, Tex. Robert was born Sept. 25, 1912 at Hamlin, Tex. They moved to Hall County with their parents in 1917.
Freebourne was educated in the Lakeview schools and graduated from high school with the class of 1924.
He entered the Army in 1934, and the Army Air Forces in 1939, for foreign service. He received his training at Hickam Field, Hawaiian Islands. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Robert was educated in Lakeview and Memphis schools, graduating from the Lakeview High School with the class of 1929.
He enlisted in June 1943, receiving his training at Ft. Sill. He sailed Dec. 20, 1944, for the Philippines, where he was assigned to the 32nd Infantry Division.
Freebourne and Robert are survived by their parents; one brother, Castle Vernon Durrett, of Lakeview; and one sister, Mrs. Lloyd C. Byars, of Amarillo. Robert also is survived by his wife, Mrs. Estelle A. Durrett, of Parnell, Hall County.
The body of Robert will be buried in Lakeview Cemetery, under the direction of Murphy-Spicer-Estes Funeral Home of Memphis.
