George was among the first boys of Monroe Township to enlist in the Twelfth Indiana Infantry where he served for one year. After being discharged, he and a neighbor boy recruited a number of boys for the Seventh Indiana Cavalry and was commissioned a lieutenant in Co. L, serving until 1866.

George was at one time appointed by Governor O.P. Morton as a detective to look after the Golden Circle organization which was helping the rebels. He secured the name of every man belonging to that klan, one of which was that of his uncle, and reported to Governor Morton. At the close of war, he moved to Illinois, remaining one year and then taking up location in Indianapolis, Indiana. After serving on the police force a number of years, he engaged in sewer construction which he followed until his death on September 2, 1920. He sleeps in Crown Hill Cemetery at
