Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from New York. William Cole was born April 18,1904 in Painted Post, New York. He graduated from Colgate University in 1925 and attended Albany Law School from 1925 to 1929. William was elected to Congress January 3, 1935. The President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, proposed the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1953. This Agency would both regulate and promote the peaceful use of atomic power. In September 1954, the United States proposed to the General Assembly the creation of an international agency to take control of fissile material. In 1955 the United Nations held the International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1957 William Sterling Cole was appointed as the first Director General of this Department and resigned as a United States Congressman on December 1, 1957. He served one term fron 1957 to 1961 as the first Director General of the Atomic Energy Agency. He died March 15,1987 in Washington, D.C.
