Son of James and Rebecca Bailey. Robert was born on the Bailey homestead and is buried with his parents and several siblings. He moved to Indiana in 1852 and to Iowa in 1861. He married and had one daughter. He was a large portly man, six feet two inches in height, sandy hair and fair complexion. In his manner he was very dignified, an excellent talker and a good companion. In his later years he was slightly deaf. When a young man he taught school. He was also a farmer and at one time was in the insurance business.
