Services for Joseph J. "Purple" Subasavage, 87, of 101 N. 12th St., Pottsville, who died Wednesday morning at Pottsville Hospital, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from Dutcavich Funeral Home, Minersville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Minersville, by the Rev. David C. Liebner. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Branch Township.
Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ursula Arminas Subasavage. He attended Minersville High School and moved to Norfolk, Va., in 1960, returning to Pottsville in 1985.
He was employed as an anthracite miner in various local mines. While in Virginia, he worked as a civil service electrician, retiring in 1979.
He was an artist.
He was a member of St. Francis Church, Good Will Fire Company No. 1, Minersville, Rolling Meadows Golf Club and Hidden Valley Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Jr., in 1961; three sisters, Valeria Purcell, Katherine White and Margaret Bertoluzzi.
