Memorial services for Calvin Dean Albert, 84, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Military honors will follow. Inurnment will be in Glen Elder.
Mr. Albert died Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at Medicalodges in Eudora after a short battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Glen Elder, the son of W.E. and Zella Burger Albert. He graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1944.
After high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and achieved the rank of first lieutenant. He was stationed in Carlsbad, N.M., where he served as a pilot trainer.
Mr. Albert received a bachelor's degree in geology from Kansas State University in 1949. He worked for the Kansas Highway Department and U.S. Geological Survey. He was transferred to the U.S. Geological Lab in Lawrence in 1968. He retired from the U.S. Geological Survey in 1978.
After retirement, he worked for the Lawrence Water Department. For the past 31 years he operated the Kraftsmon Shoppe Income Tax Service.
He was a past member of the Elks and Breakfast Optimist clubs in Salina and Lawrence. He was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 in Lawrence and served as commander in 1999-2000. He was a member of the National Republican Congressional Committee, where he received the Kansas Republican of the Year award in 2000. He was a member of the Society of the Sigma Xi. He enjoyed genealogy, woodworking and gardening.
He married Armistice Williams on Aug. 25, 1946, in Downs. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Linda Allaire and husband Rick, Dallas, Pamela Scoville and husband Dennis, Salina, and Denise Johnson and husband Tommy, Lawrence; three sons, Gregory and wife Sarah, Lawrence, Christopher and wife Diane, Topeka, and Kevin, Shawnee; a sister, Bonnie Vetter, Beloit; a brother, Billie J., Glen Elder; 10 grandchildren, Michelle, Chad, Jami, Katie, Stewart, Becky, Bryanne, Tony, Jennifer and Phillip; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
