Founder & 1st Mayor of Enterprise.
The fourth of six sons and two daughters born of John M. Carmichael & Sarah Hayes (daughter of Palmer & Mary Hayes, natives of South Carolina). Grandson of John C. & Margaret (Morrison) Carmichael, the former born in Scotland in 1785 and the latter in North Carolina.
John Henry Carmichael served in the home guards during the war (Clintonville Greys). Two of his brothers, Daniel and Joseph, both in company K, Thirty-third Alabama, were killed in the charge on Atlanta, July 22nd, 1864.
In the early 1800's Enterprise was nothing more than cross roads. Nearby settlements and towns were Clintonville, Haw Ridge and Daleville. The modest beginnings of the City of Enterprise came about in 1881 when John Henry Carmichael opened a small store on what would later become North Main Street. In the following year as settlers began moving to the area, the post office was moved from Drake Eye into Carmichael's home.
Originally, the section of the Geneva-Clintonville Road that ran through town was known as Carmichael Street. Carmichael divided and sold his lots, donated land for the first Methodist church and cemetery and built the first store on the southeast corner of College and Main.
In 1896, Enterprise incorporated with a population of 250. That year the railroad spurred development when Southwestern Alabama Railway announced the construction of a line from Enterprise to Ozark. The first passenger train arrived on February 14, 1898. The railroad brought another population growth that was also aided by the opening of a federal land office in 1897. The office was in charge of selling 3,560 acres.
