Denzel Calhoun, Seaman second class, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Calhoun of Nancy, died aboard ship, the USS Arkansas, at Seattle, Wash., Oct. 16, according to word received by his family this week from the Navy Department.
The body will be returned to Nancy and funeral services will be held at the White Oak Church at Nancy Friday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. with burial in the National Cemetery.
Seaman Calhoun was in the Navy two years and spent 20 months overseas, serving in the invasion of France and later going to the Pacific for duty where he participated in several major campaigns with his ship.
The youth, a former student at Nancy school, was employed in a shipyard at New London, Conn. before entering service. He was well liked by both old and young and his death has brought great sorrow to his relatives and many friends.
Young Calhoun is survived by his parents, five sisters, Mrs. Mell Tarter, Mrs. Frank Henderson, Misses Juanita and Jean Calhoun, all of Nancy, and Mrs. Hoyt Hinkle of Cincinnati, and two brothers, Cpl. Herbert Calhoun, who is stationed at Ft. Riley, Kans. and Linville Calhoun of Nancy, who was recently discharged from the Army.
