Francis Jane (McLain) St John was born on May 24, 1855 at North Dighton, Massachusetts. She came to Iowa in 1859 with her grandparents, Jacob S. Germond, and they settled near Taylorsville, Iowa. Her mother died when she was a very small child. Her mother was Jane Ann Germond, born in Waterloo, Massachusetts or in New York. She married James McLain of North Dighton, Mass. on August 10. 1854 at Boston. Jane is believed to have died in 1855. Her husband James remarried and had other children. He was a sea captain for thirty years. Francis' grandparents (who raised her) were Jacob S. Germond, born March 1814, and Mary Ann Savage,born May 25, 18.. in Waterloo, New York. Their child was Jane Ann Germond, mother of Francis Jane McLean. In April 7, 1871 Francis married David Barber St John at Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. It was near the Clayton-Fayette county line that they established a farm and raised their family. Their son Frank was born on March 5, 1873; James Myron was born September 13, 1887; and Maude "Maudie" was born July 2, 1892. Their daughter Myrtle died in infancy as did their son Richard. Francis passed away at Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa on October 28, 1938 and is interred in the Taylorsville Cemetery near Arlington.

A beautiful blooming rose is placed in memory of my great aunt who faced great odds in helping to establish a homestead, farm virgin land and raise a family. A special prayer of thanks to Frances and David--true pioneers of the Great Plains.
