Son of Jacob Meckes and Elizabeth (aka Catharine Elizabeth) Lessig).
John (aka. Johannes) Meckes was confirmed at Salem Church, Gilbert, Northampton (now Monroe) Co., PA, on 15 December 1822. The church confirmation record shows his date of birth as 1 December 1801 and shows his father name as Jacob Meckes. John's brother, Joseph Meckes, was confirmed on the same day.
John was married to Elizabeth Greenzweig (daughter of Tobias Greenzweig and Elizabeth Shafer) 14 May 1826 in Northampton (now Monroe Co.) Pennsylvania by Rev. Frederick William Meendsen.
In 1850, John Meckes, age 50 a farmer, was living in Polk Twp., Monroe Co., PA, with his wife, Elizabeth Meckes age 47, and ten Meckes children; Tobias age 25 a laborer, Joseph age 23 a laborer, John age 21, Peter age 16, Samuel age 14, Nathan age 12, Henry age 4, July Ann age 19, Elizabeth age 8, and Christiana age 6. John is believed to have died around October of 1855 since, on 12 October 1855, letters of administration were granted to his son, Joseph Meckes, to settle his estate. The location of his burial was not recorded. However, he may have been buried in an unmarked grave in the Salem Church cemetery at Gilbert, PA.
In 1860 John's widow, Elizabeth Mackes, age 55, was living in Polk Twp., Monroe Co., PA, in the household of her son, Joseph Mackes and his wife and family. (1860 census, Monroe Co., PA, Polk Twp., pg. 670, house #915, family #971)
