Named for her mother (who went by Augusta) "Gussie" was the mother of three sons herself. Affectionately referred to as "Old Ironpants" [i.e. stubborn] by her family.

Her eldest son, PFC Robert W. Bindschusz, USMC, was a Marine signal corps specialist. He was mortally wounded during the fighting on Iwo Jima and died aboard the USHS Samaritan and was buried at sea.

For a time after the death of her husband, Robert Edward Bindschusz, Aunt Gussie was a professional housekeeper for a Navy Flag Officer [Admiral]. While visiting her niece, Rhoda Sutter Rarick in Virginia in the 1970's she could be found (despite Rhoda's protests) compulsively cleaning the house as a means to keep busy.

[Note: The spelling of Aunt Gussie's last name was occasionally Anglicized to "Bench" or "Benches."]
