Daniel Shuey "Dan" Gerberich, 80, died on Friday, November 27, 2009 from complications of a lung disease. Dan was surrounded by his family and friends at his home he built in West Des Moines in 1964.

Dan was born on September 12, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa to Carl William and Margaret Liekweg Gerberich. He was a 1948 graduate of Tech High School in Des Moines and attended Carpenter's Apprenticeship for two years. Dan was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Air Force. On September 26, 1952, he married Betty Rose Schimmelpfennig in Des Moines, where they made their home.

Dan shined as a talented cabinet maker and carpenter. He wished to be remembered as "the best carpenter in town." He was a charter member of Glen Echo Christian Church and an associate member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Betty Rose Gerberich of West Des Moines; son, Stephen J. Gerberich of Brooklyn, NY; nephews, Matt and Mark Gerberich both of Colorado Springs, CO; two very loyal dogs and companions, Beau and Nikki; and many friends including, Rick Stessman and Mike Glaza both of West Des Moines. Dan was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy J. Gerberich; and two brothers, Thomas and William Gerberich.

Daniel's generous personality displayed itself vibrantly throughout his life from his loving care giver role with son Tim to his woodworking, cooking, painting and gardening which he shared with everyone. This was especially true when it came to one of his favorite passions: planting, growing, and eating volumes of sweet corn. His unique sense of humor was reflected in fun times shared with family and friends.
