Donald L. Whinery, 90, of Wabash, Indiana died at 1:18 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Wabash County Hospital. He was born Dec.8, 1917 in Wabash (Choketown), to William O. and Hattie E. (Reed) Whinery. He was the youngest of seven children.
He married Mary Alice DeFord in Anderson, Indiana on October 24, 1941; she died September 5, 1996. They spent their honeymoon weekend in Nashville, before Don went back to the Army.
He was a 1936 Lincolnville High School graduate. He was drafted April 19, 1941 and served until November 19, 1945. He served beach positions in Hawaii, and then moved to New Guinea to the Owen Stanley Mountains, then on to the Phillippines, where the 28th Division was named the Avengers of Bataan.
Upon release from the Army, Don worked at Nickelson File in Anderson until 1951. He then started at the United States Post Office in Wabash from 1951-1970. In October of 1970, he transferred to LaFontaine where he was a rural carrier until his retirement Jan. 9, 1981.
He was a member of the Hanna Masonic Lodge for 56 years, the American Legion, and the Wabash Men's Bowling Association. Don loved Mary Alice, his children, grandchildren, and the numerous pets they had over the years. He was an avid bowler, bowling in six leagues this past winter. He loved working on the house, yard, and being outdoors with his family dogs and cats.
He is survived by daughter, Blythe A. Whinery; son, J. Mark (Linda) Whinery; two grandchildren, Kristine Whinery, Kaitlyn Whinery; brother-in-Law, R.J. (Nina) DeFord, all of Wabash. He was preceded in death by his three brothers and three sisters.
Memorial services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, Wabash Chapel, 1241 Manchester Ave. Wabash on Friday, June 27, 2008 at 7 p.m. with Pastor Charles Dye officiating. #Burial will be in Falls Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 5 to 7 pm Friday at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic service at the funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m. Preferred memorial is the Wabash High School Bowling Team.
