Final Rites for Mrs. Joseph Berns

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Bladen United Methodist Church for Mrs. J.J. Berns who passed away Friday morning at the Webster County Community Hospital after a long illness. Rev. M. Dale Tulioch and Rev. Gertrude McCallum officiated and Eustice Bean, accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Wendell Lockhart, sang “Beyond the Sunset” and “Where We will Never Grow Old.” Pallbearers were Kenneth and Donald Berns, Ronald and Richard Larrick, Milton Householder and Paul Anderson, Interment was in the Plainview cemetery.

Florence Pearl Berns, daughter, of William B. and Salena Rea Householder was born at Bladen, Nebraska on August 9, 1889, and departed this life on December 7, 1962, at the age of 73 years, three months and twenty-eight days.

Early in life she chose teaching as her profession and to prepare herself for the same, she studied at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Taylor University and Peru State Normal College, and then spent ten years as a teacher, mostly in the high schools of Nebraska.

She was united in marriage with Joseph J. Berns on May 31, 1923. To this union was one son, Gerald Robert. In the later years of her life she devoted much time and affection to her grandchildren, Billy, Joan and Robin Berns.

During the last two years of her life, she was practically an invalid, spending much time in the hospital. Her doctor, and many of those who cared for her during this time, marveled at her courage and fortitude and were amazed at the uncomplaining spirit with which she faced it. She recognized the presence of the Unseen One and could testify with the Psalmist, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.”

She leaves to mourn her departure, her sorrowing husband, Joseph J. Berns, her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Berns, Billy, Joan and Robin; seven sisters, Mrs. Jessie Fitz of Minden, Miss Ethel Householder of Pasadena, Calif. Mrs. Carrie Clapp, Frances Larrick, all of Bladen, Miss Eva Householder of Hastings, Miss Elvis Householder of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and one brother, Fred B. Householder of Bladen. Also numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
