Jim was born December 8, 1910 in Boone, Iowa the son of John and Anna (Fairgrave) Reid. He graduated from Boone High School in 1928. Jim married Helen Bayley in 1932 in Carroll, Iowa. He started working for the Iowa State Highway Commission in 1929, served two and a half years as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy during WWII, and one and a half years as Assistant City Engineer in Carroll, Iowa. He received his Professional Engineering License on January 1, 1949. At the time of his retirement in October of 1976 he was District 3 Traffic Engineer and was honored for his over 44 years of engineering service by the Iowa Department of Transportation. He had been a member and past president of the Jefferson Iowa Country Club, a lifetime member of the American Legion, a past member of the Iowa Engineering Society, the American Society of Highway Officials, the American Public Works Association, Missouri Valley Institute of Traffic Engineers, and Sioux City and South Sioux City Eagle's Clubs. He spent 30 years in Sioux City before moving to Des Moines with his family in 1999. Jim enjoyed the finer things in life including chocolate, fishing trips to Canada, and giving magic handshakes to his many grandchildren.Jim Reid, 98, passed away at home on February 5, 2009. Funeral services were held at 10 AM, Monday, February 9, 2009 at Westover Funeral Home. Jim was survived by his daughter Kaye Reid of Ankeny; brother, Maurice Reid of Glen Ellyn, IL; 6 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; 2 brothers, Clyde Reid and Jack Reid; sisters, Myra Reid Grabau, Vera Reid Crooks and Jeannette Reid Johnson; and a daughter, Shirley Reid French. He was a sweet man and laughter was his constant companion.
