In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Menallen Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg August 7, 1864, mustered into state service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Warren's (Fulweiler's) Independent Cavalry Militia, and honorably discharged with his company November 30, 1864.

In 1890, he lived in Tyrone Township, Adams County, in 1907, in Idaville, Adams County, but died in nearby Middlesex Township, Cumberland County from "cancer of mouth and face (right side)" with "leaking hemorrhages from the sore every few days for 4 mos."
