Screenwriter. During his nearly 40-year career he established himself as a top television comedy writer, contributing to many popular programs from the early 1960s to the beginning of the 2000s. He is best known for his 1975 Emmy Award-winning script "Chuckles Bites the Dust" for the "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", an episode that became one of the most memorable in television history. Lloyd studied English at Yale University before serving in the United States Navy. He taught English at a New Jersey school and would later begin his television career as a joke writer for Johnny Carson, Jack Paar and Dick Cavett. Among the many other series he was involved in include "The Bob Newhart Show", "Taxi", "Cheers" and "Frasier". His sons Christopher and Stephen Lloyd are also television writers. (bio by: C.S.)
