May 1945: Zephyr Private Is Decorated. Gerald R. Beckham has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal by Corps artillery commander, for courage and devotion to duty in action in France last Oct. 23. Stationed at a forward observation listening post, he remained during a heavy barrage in order to report the sound of enemy guns, and permit the sound ranging platoon to locate the hostile artillery. During hours of shelling, with his supporting artillery being heavily damaged, he continued to report until the enemy position was located and silenced. The son of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Beckham, he fought both at Casino and Anzio, participated in the invasion of Southern France, and at last report was with the forward units of the 7th Army in Germany,
Gerald R. Beckham, a Beford resident for 40 years, died Thursday of a massive heart attack at Lake Granbury. He was 69.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Lucas Funeral Home in Hurst. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery near Grapevine.
Mr. Beckham was born in Zephyr, near Brownwood, and had lived in Tarrant County since 1948. He was a tool planner and retired from General Dynamics in 1987.
Mr. Beckham was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Hurst Masonic Lodge.
Survivors: Wife of 45 years, Faye Beckham of Bedford; two sons, Larry Beckham of Bedford and Leslie Beckham of Euless; daughter, Lisa Watson of Keller; sister Cleda Zell of Zephyr; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
