Son of Elijah Townsend (1850-1921) and Rachel Ann Matilda Farmer Townsend
(1855-1898) and husband of Nellie Bly Casterline Townsend (1890-1987) whom he
married on 24 Jun 1908 in Oblong, Crawford County, Illinois while working in a
pool hall and at odd jobs in the short lived gas and oil boom. Returned to
Hartford City and lived the rest of his life with the exception of when his
brother was Blackford County Sheriff and they lived on his brother's farm in
Blackford County while his brother lived in a residence at or near the jail.
Brother of William Tell Townsend (1877-1966), Emma Olive "Ollie" Townsend
(1874-1935), Charles Henry Townsend (1875-1951), John Frederick Townsend
(1881-1935) and Oma E Townsend (1889-1972).

Father of Helen Worthy Townsend (1909-1999), Vivian Thelma Townsend (1911-2005),
Carl Adam Townsend (1914-1968), Kermit Casterline Townsend (1916-1918), Marion
Mayo Townsend (1920-1985), Julia Catherine Townsend (1923- ), June Madeline

Adam Townsend

HARTFORD CITY – Adam Carl Townsend, 82, 816 Conger St., died at the Blackford County Hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of Blackford County, he was an oil field worker in his early life and was later employed at the American Window Glass Co., Hartford City.

He had served as superintendent of the county highway department and was last employed at the Sneath Glass Co. He was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church and was formerly active in Democratic circles.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie; three sons Carl, Dunkirk; Marion, Muncie; and John, Baltimore, Mass.; six daughters, Mrs. Eldo (Helen) Rogers, Mrs. George (Vivian) Bauer, Mrs. Ed (June) Holcombe, and Mrs. William (Nedra) Lips, all of Hartford City; Mrs. George (Julia) Bates, Marion, Ohio, Mrs. George (Nellie Mae) Schafler (Shaffer ?), Fort Wayne; a sister, Mrs. Lester Casterline, Hartford City; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church with burial to follow in the IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Richman-Markin Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Sunday. The rosary will be recited Sunday night in the mortuary chapel.
