Valerie Fennel Aiken Boles- best known as the mysterious voodoo priestess "Minerva" in Berendt's novel "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," which is set in Savannah.

Since she reportedly was involved in black magic and shied away from direct contact with humans for fearing the risk of being hexed , I will leave her bio at this simple state.

Valerie Boles was not a voodoo priestess but to be technically correc to the Low Country Region and the culture of the Gullah & Geechee people she was a "Root Doctor," Or "Root Lady." While the practice stems from African traditions, it is not specifically vodun or vodou in the Haitian sense.
