Farley was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Company D (Robeson Rifle Guards), 18the North Carolina Infantry in Alexander County at the age of 30 on September 5, 1862, for the war. He failed to report for duty with the company until November-December 1864. He was detailed for light duty on February 2, 1865, by reason of a gunshot wound of the left hand. The place and date he was wounded was not reported. He was reported absent on light duty through February 1865.
