Edith went to Point Pleasant cemetery in Harrison county, West Virginia with her father when he took his mother to be buried next to her husband and near her mother & father plus four siblings when her grandmother passed away in 1918. She returned in 1948 with daughter to visit the grave, with monument same as the Carthage monument, except their names were on back-side, instead of using headstones.

She graduated Carthage High School in 1926, same year as cousin Virginia Irwin and future husband Edwin Hough who was their Class Valedictorian.

In APR 1928, when her mother died she left college, University of Missouri, where she was a member of the Women's Glee Club, Zeta Sigma sorority and other activities, returning home to look after her father, brothers, S C, jr and Luke, plus his two infant sons who lost their mother 14 hours after her mother died.

She later finished her college work in Springfield where she taught school in 1933, living at 820 east Grand.

In 1935 at Manitou Springs, Colorado she married Edwin and in 1936 gave birth to their only child, a daughter named Jane Ellen Hough who in turn had a son GianMarco. She, Edwin & Jane remained in Carthage, living at 1205 south Main street until 1938 when Edwin removed to Washington D C and became a Real Estate Broker before settling in for his life's career with the U S government first the Navy then State Department.
