Mary Jane Smith, daughter of Sarah (née Johnson) and Tillman Smith, was born in 1837 in Ohio. Although her death certificate states that Columbus was her place of birth, Fayette County is more likely. Her parents were married there in 1833 and her father’s household was enumerated there in 1840.
The Smith family moved from Ohio to Illinois in the early 1850s, and farmed in what would become Brown Township in Champaign County, Illinois. Mary Jane Smith and Moses "Hilsbury" were married on 20 May 1862 in Champaign County. The couple is known to have had five children, born from 1863 to 1875 in Champaign County's East Bend Township, where Moses Hillsberry had inherited a portion of his father's farm.
During the Civil War, Moses Hillsberry served as a private in the Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and was twice medically discharged. Over the years, his health deteriorated. Pension examiners in 1890 found him to be "totally disabled." Mary Hillsberry was enumerated as the head of household in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. Widowed in 1908, she lived with her unmarried sons Isaac and Samuel Gerard until her death in 1922.
