Elizabeth Clark Foster, daughter of John Edward Foster and the former Jane Bowman Wardlaw, was born near Calhoun Mills in Abbeville county, South Carolina on the 30th of May 1841. Her family was well respected in the surrounding communities and descended from numerous Revolutionary patriots.

On June 2nd 1858, Elizabeth married Philip Augustus Covin; son of Louis and Mary Ann [née Hutchinson] Covin, part of an old French Huguenot. Elizabeth and Philip Covin would have the following known children:
Margaret Martha (1859-1862)
Infant (1860-1860)
Jane Wardlaw (1863-1896)
Mamie (1866-1920)
William Oscar (1868-1938)
Cora Isabelle (1870-1873)
