Col. J. Y. Dashiell came to San Antonio as a paymaster with the U. S. Army in 1849. He served for several years in the army and shortly after his resignation entered the profession of journalism which he continued until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he espoused the Confederate cause. After the war war he re-entered journalsim and became chief editor of the Herald.

As an Old Fellow, Col. Dashiell had a record of 55 years of membership and active work. He was initiated in 1833 in Boone Lodge No. 1 in Louisville, Ky. He was one of the founders of San Antonio Lodge No. 11.

Col. Dashiell was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church and for successive years held the office of senior warden of St. Mark's Cathedral in San Antonio. In 1887 he received a United States Mexican War Pension for his service as paymaster.

Jim Mechling informed me that there is a Jeremiah Yellot Dashiell collection at the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.
