Third daughter of Samuel Osgood and Frances Osgood. Her mother had a brief, though platonic, relationship with writer Edgar Allan Poe. A poetess named Elizabeth Ellet tried to excite scandal by suggesting that Fanny Fay was, in fact, Poe's daughter with Frances. Some biographers continue to speculate on this possibility, and some have suggested Poe's poem "Ulalume" is really about Fanny Fay and her grave.
