Bill DeWeese was mamaquilts' Dad's best friend.

Bill and his best friend Herb Ford both loved to fix their cars and race each other and others. One of their favorite car games was "chicken". They would go to a place not far from Brookston and go full steam towards each other until someone pulled out of the game. Teenagers and their silly ideas.

Race on Bill, race on.

Bill was a CH-47A Chinook Flight Engineer assigned to the 179th Aviation Company, 17th Aviation Group, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade, U.S. Army Vietnam. He was killed while riding in CH-47A tail #66-19069. Crash information/accident summary:

The aircraft was flown following a re-inspection of the completed work done after the replacement of two engine gear boxes to transmission drive shafts. The helicopter was observed to explode in mid-air and fall to the ground burning. The cause has been determined to be desynchronization of rotor blades due to lack of lubrication in the combining transmission. [This means as the transmission began to seize, the rotor blades began hitting each other and disintegrating and hitting the fuselage and fuel tanks - I flew many hours in a CH-46 Navy version and this is a tragic error. According to the accident summary, it appears someone forgot to check the aft transmission oil level after replacing the drive shafts. - Dan FAG member 47630541]

When Herb found out that Bill had died. He requested that he be allowed to accompany the body back home for burial. His commanding officer allowed him to fly back with the body for burial.
