Lonnie L. Banning, 82, of Altamont, died at 6 .m. Wednesday (Sept. 9, 1998) in the Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Free Methodist Church, Cowden, with burial in Mound Cemetery, Cowden. Visistaion is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the Lockart and Sons Funeral Home, Cowden. Memorials may be given to The Gideons.
He was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Shelby County, the son of Fred and Myrtle Banning Banning. He married W. Ruth Dunaway Dec. 24, 1940, in St. Louis, Mo., and she died Sept. 26, 1997.
Surviving are a son, Brad and wife Terri of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter Jo Ellis and husband Gary of Altamont; sisters, Lois Jones and husband Ed of Lakewood and Velta "Sis" Randall and husband Dick of Beecher City; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Johnnie; brother, Rayburn; and one granddaughter.
Mr. Banning was founder and owner of Banning Brokerage Co. and was retired from Hygrade Cheese Co., Shelbyville, and the Clearfield Cheese Co., Clinton, Mo. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church, VFW, Sunrise Optimist Club, Clinton, Mo. and The Gideons. He coached Little League and Pony League from 1958 to 1964. He attended the First United Methodist Church, Altamont, was a former member of the Shelby County Zoning Commission and Cowden School Board. He was past mayor of Cowden and former circuit clerk of Shelby County. He served in the 42nd Airborne during World War II.
