Malinda Brown Coker was the daughter of Benjamin Brown and Nancy ? Brown of Laurens District, South Carolina where she was born. She married Joseph Coker in 1820 in Laurens, S.C. They came to Texas via Tennessee and Alabama. Malinda died in Cherokee County, TX and Joseph and their children moved to San Antonio, Bexar, TX on the invitation of Joseph's brother John "Jack" Coker. He received land in Bexar County from his service in the Texas Revolution at San Jacinto. He was a bachelor and Joseph inherited the land. The Coker Cemetery is located in San Antonio on Land that Joseph donated. He and most of his children are buried there. James Coker (Joseph and John's other brohter) stayed in Cherokee County, TX where he reared his children. Malinda is buried in a pioneer grave which is covered with large red rocks. On one end of the grave is an inscription scratched in a large sandstone rock with her name and birth and death dates. On the other end of the grave is a marker erected by the Coker Cemetery Assoc., San Antonio, TX. This marker shows Malinda's birth year as 1811 although the original stone marker gives the exact date of 11-3-1803.
