Atwood Colby Souther, son of William T. Souther and Betsey Ferrin, born 18 May 1840 at Levant, Maine and died 10 Jun 1927 in Stoneham, Massachusetts. Husband of Nancy Rosanna Longfellow and father of George C. Souther.
At age 19, Colby was found residing with the William G. Peaks family at West Old Town, Maine and working in the mill.
He was a Veteran of the Civil War. At age 23 he enlisted in the Union Army as a Private, (the exact date was not recorded). On 15 Oct 1863 transferred into F Company, Maine 1st Calvary. In 1865 he was promoted to Corporal. He also served in the Washington, D.C. 1st Calvary.
By 1880, Atwood and his family was found residing in Somerville, Massachusetts. Boarding with them was a Donnell W. Hilton, a 25 year old Barber born in Maine.
Atwood can be found in the 1893 Boston City Directory as a Watchman for the Custom House.
He died at his residence at 44 Marble Street. Atwood had lived at Salem for 20 years.
He was cremated at Mount Auburn Crematorium at Cambridge, Massachusetts on 13 Jun and the ashes were turned over the next day to the funeral director and then interred at Stoneham at Lindenwood Cemetery, Soldier's Lot, Grave #21, just inside the main gate on the right hand side. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (a cousin) is buried at Mount Auburn and could possible be related to Atwood's wife.
