Daniel Owen was born in Mold in 1836. The youngest of six children he was born into hardship and poverty. His father was killed in a pit flood at Argoed Colliery in Mold when Daniel was a baby.

He became an apprentice tailor in Mold. He began preaching in the Welsh Methodist Church and studied for the ministry, although he didn't complete his studies. He was taken ill and stopped preaching. Instead he focussed on his writing and had a number of books published basing his characters on local people. He became the first chairman of Mold Urban District Council in 18954 He died in 1895 and is buried in Mold Cemetery. He is recognised as Wales' first great novelist.
