Hannah Howell was actually born in 1797 in South Carolina , although her headstone is inscribed 1803. She was 94 years old when she died. Her maiden name is unknown. Three possibilities are Andrews, Anderson and McCrary, although none has been proven. Her husband was Thomas Howell. They had 11 children, William P Howell, Huldah Elizabeth, Harriet Minerva, John M, Levinia Jane, Thomas Gabriel, Eliza Ann, Mary Catherine, Sarah Emaline, Cynthia Matilda, and Martha Missouri. Two of her sons, William and John, were killed in the Civil War. She was widowed in 1862, under tragic circumstances. When her son William died from pneumonia during the war, her husband went to Richmond to bring home the body. He, too, took sick, and died there in Richmond, where he and William are buried.
Hannah never remarried.

Hannah Howell was my great-great-great-grandmother. She was the first person to be buried in this cemetery. The land for the cemetery was hers.
