BILLIE LEE MARKER, 82, passed away 12 October 2009 at Freeman Hospital Joplin, MO. after a long and debilitating illness.
Billie was born 1 March 1927 near Vinita to Clayton Roy and Clara Viola Vogler Marker.
He grew up in Miami and as a teenager was employed at the St. James Hotel as an elevator operator.
His great grandparents had been part of the Delaware Tribe removed from the Kansas reservation to Indian Territory in 1868. The Marker family settled near Ketchum.
He joined the army in 1945 and was a Korean Conflict veteran. After his discharge from the service in 1952 he worked for the railroad in Tulsa.
He married 25 December 1949 in Eureka Springs, AR. Thelma Louise Althouse from Commerce. They later divorced.
In 1955 the family moved to Miami and Billie was employed by B.F. Goodrich. He retired after 30 years. During those years he became a fine bowler and an excellent pilot.
Billie is preceded in death by his son Ronnie Leroy Marker, wife Rita Joy Gates Marker, and sister Mrs. Betty Louise Marker Heard.
He is survived by his daughter Mrs. Gloria Marker Fortney of Tulsa, a brother Arthur Lee Marker of Wyndotte, 2 sisters Mrs. Mary Jane Marker Stebbins of Joplin, Edna Louise Marker of Miami, a grandson, Brent D. Fortney of Tulsa, 2 great grandsons, Roger D. and Brent P. Fortney of Tulsa. He also has 23 nieces and nephews.
For the last five years Billie had resided in a nursing home in Joplin, MO.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Tulsa Chapter.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday October 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Oklahoma. Rev. Geoff Buffalo will officiate. Military Rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 147 Funeral Detail.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the GAR Cemetery in Miami.
Services are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami.
