The son of URIAH & WINIFRED GARTON, he married FRANCES "FANNY" (DICKINSON) GARTON on March 5, 1751 in Virginia.

p. 215 Deed Book E Feb'y 26, 1760 Zachary Garton & Elijah Garton and Frances, his wife, to Ephraim Knight. 36 pounds currency 165 acres in Spots Co. Witnesses: Uriah Garton, John Smith, John Knight, Uriah Knight, Edwd Herndon, Henry Carter, A. Foster, Harry Bartlett, May 6, 1760.

On the 28th of July 1763 in Orange Co, Va , Elijah transferred land to his son Uriah. On the 26th of Sept, 1765, Elijah and Frances witnessed a mortagage from James Shirley to Uriah Garton. On the 24th of October, 1765 a deed is recorded transferring 100 acres from Elijah Garton to Timothy Burgess.

Elijah Garton purchased 154 acres in Augusta Co., VA. This land was surveyed and recorded 26 Nov 1768. The land was on the East side of the Dry River and Muddy Creek next to Byron Muncey's land.

He died intestate after a long illness. His estate appeared delinquent in Tax Levies in 1773 and sold at auction 13 Oct 1775. It is itemized on 20 May 1777 and settled in Augusta Co. Va court records (Will Book 5, p. 500)
