B-24H-30-FO Liberator #42-95379, nicknamed "Extra Joker" on mission out of Foggia, Italy to bomb the airdrome at Markersdorf, Austria, was shot up by a German Fw-190A-8 and caught on fire then exploded near Türnitz, Austria, killing the 10-man crew. Missing Air Crew Report № 7956.

Extracted from the Witness Report by TSgt Lindley G. Miller of the 725th Bomb Squad., right waist gunner in formation on 23 Aug. 1944. The B-24 H airplane #42-95379 nicknamed "Extra Joker", piloted by 1st Lt. Kenneth A. Whiting was flying in number two position when it was hit by a FW-190 (Focke-Wulf Fw 190 airplane) in the attack over the IP. The Main tanks burst into flame, after which the ship went into a spin to left. After dropping approx. 5000 ft, the ship exploded at abt. 11:16 near Turnitz, Austria. There were ten men on that aircraft. Sgt. Elmer J. Anderson was listed as the nose gunner.
The 451st Bomb group, 725th Bomb Squadron left Castellucio Field in Italy intending to target Markersdorf Airdrome in Austria.

Elmer graduated from Orlando High in 1942, was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran who served as a B-24 Liberator nose gunner, was a Purple Heart Recipient and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Orlando. "In grateful memory of Sergeant Elmer J Anderson who died in the service of his country in the Mediterranean Area. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live and on a personal note your family remembers and honors your service as well. Published in the Orlando Sentinel on August 22, 2014.
