In the spring of 1850 Burnet Easley, along with two brothers - William D. & Francis M. Easley- sat out for the California gold fields. Only Francis M. Easley returned from California to tell the family what happened. William D. had been murdered while taking gold to be assayed at Mud Springs, California. Burnet did not even make it to California; he died on the way on July 16, 1850. Family tradition states that he died on the trail somewhere in the Utah territory from the effects of drinking alkali water and was buried in an unmarked grave.
