Ida May Gibbons survived a tragic house fire at the age of 18 in which she lost her father and two siblings. She was married twice and had three children, Irene, William, and Marian, from her first marriage to William J. Paulson. The children were remanded to the custody of the State of Massachusetts sometime after the United States Census was taken in 1930 when their grandmother Rose Gibbons appeared to be living in the Paulson household. Ida must have divorced Paulson before her marriage in 1932 to Carl Emerick Carlson. In 1934, Rose Gibbons was being informed of her grandchildren's progress by the state of Massachusetts. Rose died in 1944. William Paulson died three years after his grandmother. When Harold Watson Gibbons died in 1958, Ida attended his funeral. Carl died three years later. Irene was mainstreamed out of state custody only a few years before Ida's own death in 1975.
