Our grandfather was a carpenter by trade. He moved from Michigan relocating to Snohomish, Washington with his mother and step-father than to the Portland area, after the death of his father. He was approx 7/8 years old. He grew up and met Cora Bair and was married on Oct 24, 1925, who he met while grandmother was hitchhiking to Portland. They were married for 50 years.
He help build the refrigeration building in Hood River Or during the Great Depression,(which still stands today) working each week and coming home on the week ends. That must have been some drive back than.... it now takes at least 2 hours, one way.
He also built many many homes in the greater Portland area after that, one which was his own, where my Daddy grew up which also still stands today!
Grammpa LOVED! his roses. Living in the "city" Gramma and Grampa had quite a large area for their home, their garden and many fruit trees.
We use to run and play climbing all those trees. -- But -- there was one portion in the corner that we never ever dared to even go near. The Rose Garden! Grampas prized roses. They were so beautiful!!!!
I too love roses - a trait I'm sure I have inherited from him. I could have stood and stared at his garden for hours, dare not touching them. The smell of a good old fashion rose always reminds me of my grandfather. Miss you grampa.............
