Mary Ferrell was the daughter of Alfred Ferrell and Tamsey Lawson Ferrell, per her mother's Civil War Pension Records, Mary was born on August 13, 1853. Her father Alfred Ferrell was a veteran of the Mexican–American War. He served in Capt. Powell Company, "E" 5th Tennessee Volunteers. Alfred joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in Co "L" 8 Regt Tennessee Cav. Volunteers. He was captured and died in a Confederate prison camp in Richmond, Virginia.
Mary had four children all raised by the Ferrell name, they were John Bell Ferrell, Hattie Jane Ferrell, George Thomas 'Tom' Ferrell, and Alfred 'Alf' Lewis Ferrell.
